Back to Cooking Classes at Le Moulin

Hands on cooking classes with their own chef in a private kitchen is often what our guests look forward to when they come to La Forge. Just down the road at our farm, Bruno’s kitchen in 14th Century water mill (Le Moulin) is the perfect place to get together to cook. After a visit to the market in Libourne the menu was all fish this time…except for the desert. A carpaccio of tuna and cod with a parmasan topping for the sarter, red mulet on a bed of garden vegetables with egg plant, cheese then rasberries in a mint cream desert on a shortbread cookie. Everyone went home with the recipes and proud of their newly learned techniques from a “pro”: Chef Philippe Delobel.

While the English were enjoying our home in Entre Deux Mers we were enjoying the Italians in Chianti

Zuccini flowers were my favorites until I discoverd THE most delicious spinach lasagna…at a restaurant we just happened upon — “il Pozzo” in the tiny walled village of  Monteriggioni in Chianti. As it turns out, the retaurant is quite well known, and for good reason, everything was perfect from the warm welcome (we arrived only 10 minutes before the kitchen was due to close, yet were ushered in with great warmth and never felt that we were hurried) to the creamy pana cotta desert.

Locanda Casanuova and the Castello Vicchiomaggio  are my adresses for touring in the Tuscany region of Chianti where everyone’s vineyard is also an olive plantation and the landscape, even under the hot August sun, is as beautiful as you’ve ever imagined Tuscany to be:
Ulla und Thierry Besancon’s motto  at Casanuova, 20 minutes south of Florence toward Arrezo is: “La Bellezza della Semplicità.” The beauty of simplicity is a holiday without luxuriousness, but with just those pleasantries that help you relax in natural surroundings with delicious food in a home that welcomes their guests with a distinctive personal touch.  http://www.casanuova.info/
Castello Vicchiomaggio 30 minutes from Florence toward Sienne the Castello is ranked amongst Italy’s top wine producers and is also an elegant hotel that combines historic charm with modern service and facilities…like screens on the windows !   http://www.vicchiomaggio.it/

The first two weeks of august are still available !

The first two weeks of august are still available if you’d like to rent La Forge and the guest cottage for your summer family reunion…or vacation with friends. An English family has reserved the main house from July 14th for two weeks. We  now have a wonderful, small, children’s room with 4 “lit clos”..that look tempting even to some of my adult guests.

The main house can be rented for 7 adults and 4 children on its own or with the cottage that sleeps 2 or 3

For the august 2012 rental you may still contact me at: whatscookinginfrance@gmail.com

RENT OUR HOME FOR A MONTH THIS SUMMER !

Again this year we are meeting up for a family reunion in Italy.  I’ve told everyone that my B&B will probably be closed from  July 14th to Aug 12th…so I’m looking for just the right family or group of friends to rent our home for the month while I’m gone. Friends will be near by if you have any questions and I have a gardener and a house keeper who will come to keep things tidy.  The price is 3000€ for 2 weeks or 4000€ for 3 weeks and 5000€ for the month ! It sleeps 7 + a children’s room for 4 ( see the rooms on my B&B pages) and you can just move in and feel that you are French for the summer. Please pass the word along. Of course I’ll give priority to my former guests. If you take the cottage as well there’s enough room for 10 + the children’s room. The cottage is 600€ per week if rented on its own but only 400€ if rented along with the main house.  HURRY AND RESERVE NOW !!

La Forge is an hour from the Atlantic ocean beaches and 5 minutes from our private family pool at our farm at Pey Froment (1 mile away) .

St Quentin de Baron is 45 minutes from the Bordeaux airport and 30 minutes from the train station.

BONNE ANNEE

On this sunny, cold and snowy day I’ve finally sent out my new years cards to family,  friends and guests as well as a notice of new links and information here on my blog. One of my new years resolutions is to write more often ! Of course I’d like to tempt you all to come and visit. A photo of La Forge in the snow is perhaps not the best way to entice you to come to France when many of you are probably already looking forward to the warmth of summer. But I promise, this only happens once a year…and not even every year !  For a mid-westerner like me I’m delighted to have the crisp snow of my childhood. And of course, as no one knows how to drive on snow here in Bordeaux everything comes to a stop ! Schools are closed, stores have a hard time keeping supplies, the streets are empty except for a few cars that crawl along. You see people walking  along the roadside in the snow marveling at the beauty and the silence…but looking forward to tomorrow when it will have all melted and they can get back to business as usual.

Enjoy the blog, take some time to explore my new pages ! And think about coming for a vacation…or even more if you’d like to be French for a couple of weeks…the whole house and cottage are available to rent for a family or group of friends from mid July to mid august. You can check out the details on the page “Summer Rentals”.

A WEEK IN THE PAYS BASQUE WITH THE “TWO BORDELAIS”

A week in the Basque Country with the “Two Bordelais”, Jean Pierre and Denise Moullé, this september was a delight for everyone on the tour. With François Bartaburu’s B&B in St Palais as our home base we rode though and trekked the hills and valleys of the Basque country visiting the local artisans and farmers: walking sticks and table linens as well as fresh smoked trout, black pig hams and aged ewe cheeses…everything was even more delicious after our walks. Having lived for many years in the Pays Basque I was happy to share my adopted “pays” and friends with everyone.

As Denise wrote on their website:  http://www.twobordelais.com/

“When one thinks of France what comes to mind is not necessarily the diversity of cultures that make up our small country. The Pays Basque is certainly one of the most striking example. Its persistence to keep alive its unique culture in a country that has long wanted a unified idea behind the word ‘France’ and in a world that seems to be more and more homogeneous, the Pays Basque makes us respect the differences it has been able to cultivate.

We want you to meet the local people and invite you inside private homes. We want you to learn how they live with their past history, share their passions of today and their dreams for the future.”

With Jean Pierre, chef at Chez Pannise in Berkeley, CA ,our meals were delicious with the local produce and his expert hand…in hand with his daughter, Elsa, an accomplished chef herself.

Among other local foods Michel Goicoechea’s  smoked trout,

“les Truites de Banka”,  was one of our favorites.

The trout, raised in almost their own natural stream bed,

take up to five years before they are caught and smoked.

2010 SEASON WAS JUST TOO BUSY TO POST

I didn’t have too much time to sit and enjoy my super comfortable 1930’s lawn chairs or watch my garden grow but our many new guests certainly did. Despite all the activities I helped them organise they enjoyed coming back home each day to just relax in the garden with a good book…La Forge has a great French/English library and subscribes to several papers and magazines including the Christian Science Monitor.

As usual my guests with the Two Bordelais: Jean Pierre and Denise were all delightful and I hope they’ll come back often.
I’ve been having more and more French guests as well as my usual international ones. This is a bonus for everyone as that what this French American home is all about…the place to meet the French but with a little American touch that the French enjoy as well.
We’re busy refreshing La Forge for next years guests and using the services of my daughter Eloïse as the interior designer…you can see some of the changes on her new web site: http://www.changerdinterieur.com

CHEF’S ROOM now open

Guests from Rotterdam were the first to settle into the new room just off Bruno’s country kitchen in our 12th century water mill. I think they were a little surprised when Bruno met them at the end of the lane and led them down the steps and across a wooden foot bridge. They walked along cobble stone path (beside the vegetable garden) that leads to the mill’s little red door that open directly into the kitchen.

This is were some of our cooking classes take place and Bruno has had his “table d’hôte” or guest table at lunch every saturday 10 years. Jean Pierre and Denise Moullé always bring their guests from www.twobordelais.com to the mill’s kitchen table.

We have tried to keep the guest room in the same spirit as the rest of the mill…though I’m sure that the miller  never had such a comfortable bed !

The window to the east looks out over the stream that runs under the mill to the fields and woods…. with a few ducks bantering in the water.

The room is full of Bruno’s most interesting cookbooks…in both English  and French !

The full bath was Bruno’s work. And I must admit, the high skylight cieling and great open shower were certainly worth the wait.

The price is 75€/night and, if you stay a while, as our Dutch guest did, you’re welcome to use the kitchen too.
